Apply G-Rework waterslide decals cleanly on the MG MS-07B Gouf and HG GQuuuuuuX GFreD with a step-by-step process, softening tips, and common mistakes to avoid.
Quick answer
Apply G-Rework decals with a gloss clear coat first, slide each decal into place with plenty of water, then use a setting solution and a softening solution only where the film needs to conform. Work one decal at a time and let everything cure before handling.
Why the Gouf and GFreD need different handling
The MG MS-07B Gouf has large, mostly flat armor panels, so decals sit easily but can look lost if you rush placement. The HG GQuuuuuuX gMS-κ GFreD has a more compact, curved silhouette, which means more edges and raised details for the film to wrap around. Treat the Gouf as a placement exercise and the GFreD as a conforming exercise.
When softening solutions help and when they hurt
A setting solution helps the decal settle without silvering; a softening solution makes the film stretch over curves. On the GFreD, use softening sparingly on curved surfaces and avoid it on flat panels where a setting solution is enough. On the Gouf, over-softening can wrinkle large decals that would otherwise lie flat. If a decal starts to curl, stop adding solution and let it dry before pressing it down.
Surface prep decides the final look
G-Rework decals are waterslide film, so they show every speck of dust and every matte texture underneath. A glossy clear coat gives the film a smooth bed and makes silvering less likely. If you plan a matte topcoat, apply it after the decals have fully cured, not before.
Step-by-step G-Rework decal application
- Clean and gloss the surface: Wash the parts with mild soapy water, rinse, and dry fully. Apply a thin gloss clear coat and let it cure before any decal goes on. Do not decal over bare matte plastic or sanding dust; that is the most common cause of silvering.
- Cut and wet the decal: Cut close to the artwork, leaving a small border. Soak it in room-temperature water for 10–20 seconds until it slides freely on its backing paper. Never force a decal off the paper; if it resists, soak longer.
- Position with water as lubricant: Place the decal and backing on the model, slide the paper away, and adjust with a damp brush. Use enough water to move it, then blot gently with a cotton swab from the center outward. On the GFreD's curves, position slightly proud of the final spot and let the water settle it.
- Apply setting solution: Brush a setting solution over the decal and let it dry. This pulls the film down onto the gloss coat and removes trapped air. Do not poke at the decal while it is wet with setting solution; let it do its work.
- Use softening solution only where needed: On curved or raised areas, apply a small amount of softening solution and let the decal conform. Press gently with a damp swab only after the film softens. Over-softening on flat Gouf panels can wrinkle the decal; use setting solution there instead.
- Cure, then topcoat: Let decals dry for at least several hours, then apply your clear topcoat in thin layers. Check edges for lifting before you topcoat. A matte topcoat over a decal that is not fully cured can trap moisture and cloud the film.
